MySQL certifications follow up

Ok here goes, i promised myself a while back i would get MYSQL certified and finally had some time to sort it out. Turns out that MYSQL provides 4 certification levels; associate, developer, DBA, cluster DBA (http://www.mysql.com/certification/). The first one is designed to cater for users to show that they aren't complete muppets and can be trusted with the basics of MYSQL and cost $125/£110 and can be sat at a VUE test centre near you (http://www.vue.com).
The developer and DBA certification are both version dependent and contain of 2 exams each ($125/£110 each). So you ll have to keep re-sitting every-time MYSQL upgrades its major version number.
the developer exams focus on the in and outs of (ab-)using MYSQL server/queries in their day to day work. The DBA exams focus on server management and query optimization and can be sat independently of the developer exams.
last but not least is the CLuster DBA exams who test you ability to run MYSQL cluster, the high availability solution offered by MYSQL.
According to the MYSQL certification candidate guide (http://www.mysql.com/certification/candguide.html#t26) i only need to read the MySQL 5.0 Certification study guide instead of my previous list (http://www.attachmentgenie.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=32) to obtain the first 3 certifications but i have a feeling that ill still want to read a few of these books , especially the MYSQL phrasebook, MySQL Pocket Reference and visibone MySQL cards have been very useful so far.
Judging by the subjects covered in the exams i am thinking about skipping the associate certification and go for the developer I and II first and then the DBA exams.

Oxford students record first NVL loss

I spend 7 hours on bus today to have 3 min on court, what a day. Left London around 9 to arrive at home around 11.15am. Spend another 2.15 hrs being driven to Sheffield by our excellent driver/libero Denis (i swear he drives slower now his wife is here). THe whole team hasnt trained properly for the last 2 weeks and man did it show. Sheffield 2 is as such not a magnificent team but they have been training their ass of and kept rolling all there balls into 6 where we were struggling to pick them up. Did have a nice Nando's when we got home mmmmm... i am glad we didnt stop at wimpy's to finish of the pooh day in style

student team approaching fast

Having dreaded that we might have to play the very very old-school 6-2 system with our best players there is some sunlight at the horizon. Last week we had a new setter show so 6-1 is back on the cards and freshers week is still to come..
We had a classroom session(a pub session to be fair but you ll get the point.) today, to get our mind on next season and to explain my plans for this year.
We ll be trying to get a competive team out this year while looking to the future in this transition year.

NVl team records second win

Reading Aces vs Oxford students. Newly relegated and sporting Oxfords former coach/player Joe balance
the team was looking forward to this game. Turned out the be fairly easy, reading only managed to put out 7 players including the coach and one of the lines people. Needless to say we were done pretty quickly, although we were sloppy enough to drop one set against them. We ll have a couple of weeks of before we play sheffield 2 away. This teams consist of lots of the sheffield Hallam players we meet during BUSA and EVA student cup so this should be good

Iphone is coming :-)

its coming...... on November 9th the iphone will be released over here in the uk. I cant wait and i so want one. The only thing is that you need to hand over 269 pounds ($540) and need to sign up with O2 for 2 years. lets hope a) apple doesnt pull a similar stunt they pulled in the us by lowering the price significantly after 2 months and b) O2 wants to give me a contract ,which isnt always easy when you only lived in the uk for 2 years

1st win and more sign ups

I so had it planned i signed up a monster order of 17 players over the summer and in the last week before the season starts way to early i got the register two more players. Who are great assets for the team but still we can only take 13 (including non playing coach) to a match due to the space on the score sheet.

Our opponents were the Brentwood Estonians that were the only team to beat us twice next year and during the away game we blew our chances to directly stay in div2. So we had some scores to settle while and we were anxious to see the full damage our heavily enforced team could do. ANd let me tell you we are gonna have some fun this year. After signing up two div one player and a top 20 australian beach player and 4 other guys we are cooking with gas. Even after putting on the "subs" the team didnt show a drop in quality at all. Saweet.

go play to small tshirt team pic?

Moscow visit

Moscow was awesome. I just had an amazing week in Moscow at my friends Denis's wedding. (and marina of course). I had the great road trip feeling to it while actually not having to spend lots of time in a car.(ok 7 hrs total in a plane and 2x 40 min on the train). Moscow is a great mix of "modern wester" life we are accustomed too over here and old ussr habits. THe wedding it self was amazing and the night in the park afterwards was unforgettable. Even trying to get russians to go to bed at 5 am i wouldn't have wanted to miss for the world

If i get my act together ill upload some of the pics and ill try to elaborate a bit more on my week in russia

N770 update palava

I just wanted to update the navicore sat nav software on my N770, which pointed out the fact that the application database on the unit was corrupted. Luckily for me (not) the simplest way to resolve this is the update the unit. Which turned out the be an upgrade for me and man does it rock. the update from the v2 to v3 branch definitely speeds up the whole unit. So it turned out to be a good night after all.

mysql associate exams available

the MySQL Associate certification (CMA) is an entry level certification. It is intended for those that are relatively new to using the MySQL database server and covers basic database management system concepts as well as basic SQL. We recommend the CMA certification for MySQL users that know the basics, but have not yet obtained the experience gained by professional MySQL DBAs or Developers.

The CMA certification may be seen as a stepping stone towards the more advanced Developer (CMDEV) and Database Administrator (CMDBA) certification. Holding CMA certification is not a formal prerequisite to attaining other certifications, you should consider starting your MySQL certification path with the CMA certification for a number of reasons:

Gain experience and familiarity in taking MySQL Certification exams
Ensure the prerequisites at are in place before investing into more expensive CMDEV and/or CMDBA certification

mmm perhaps i should look into this too. Looks like MYSQL is creating a basic certification for MYSQL users.

go php 5 !!!

Two great PHP initiatives were launched in the last weeks. Over @ http://www.gophp5.org Larry Garfield kicked of the dance by starting a push to go PHP5 only from 5.2.2008 onwards. Major projects and more importantly ISP jumped in on the bandwagon. A week later PHP4 was sealed when the end of life for PHP4 was annouced.

Long due natural progression i think. But there are still some mixed feelings around. If i have some time illtry to ctrl+cand xtrl+v some of the links together.
Mental note: must bug myisp for PHP5.

MySQL certifications

I decided to bite the bullet and finally get MySQL certified. I ll try and keep you posted in the hopefully very near future about my progress.

Anyhow these are 30 cm of nerdy literature i think ill need to read on my way to full blown certification

MySQL 5.0 Certification study guide
MySQL Clustering
MySQL tutorial
MySQL database design and tuning
Mysql in a nutshell
MYSQL
high performance MySQL
MySQL stored procedure
MySQL cookbook
MYSQL phrasebook
MySQL Pocket Reference
visibone MySQL cards

This should keep me going for a while and i am sure i wont need half of them or will only need to read half due to reitteration. but still the pile looks impressive on my night stand

still lovin' the Dualphone especially now the released their new firmware. Not only does it speed up the feel of the phone but also this update enables the multiple handset modus. The only downsides i have seen so far are that when the screensaver kicks in the screen goes proper black and you ll have to push a button first to get the screen back and now that fact that you can only be logged in with one skype account at a time (even when you have multiple handsets)
